Who Was Vasco da Gama?
Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer. He was born in Portugal around 1460. Portugal is a small country beside the Atlantic Ocean.
When Vasco was growing up, Portuguese sailors were exploring the coast of Africa. They wanted to find new ocean routes to faraway places.
In 1497, King Manuel I of Portugal chose Vasco da Gama to lead an important voyage. Vasco and his sailors left Portugal in several ships. They sailed south along the coast of Africa and around the Cape of Good Hope.
Then they sailed across the Indian Ocean.
In 1498, Vasco da Gama reached India!
This was important because Europeans wanted spices and other valuable goods from Asia. Spices such as pepper and cinnamon were very expensive in Europe.
Vasco da Gama had found an ocean route that connected Portugal and India.
