Pre-Columbian & Early Contact Era (c. 1000–1587)
- c. 1000: Leif Erikson establishes a Norse settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows.
- 1492: Christopher Columbus lands in the Caribbean, initiating sustained European contact.
- 1497: John Cabot explores the Canadian coast, establishing English claims.
- 1513: Juan Ponce de León explores Florida searching for gold.
- 1524: Giovanni da Verrazzano maps the Atlantic coast for France.
- 1534: Jacques Cartier claims the St. Lawrence River region for France.
- 1540: Francisco Vázquez de Coronado explores the American Southwest.
